Our Growing Practices
Our planting principles incorporate three management systems: Organically Grown, Sustainable Agriculture, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The underlying point they share is stewardship of the land: leaving the soil as good if not better than when first farmed for agricultural production. We do not use synthetic herbicides, fertilizers, or pesticides.
We strongly believe that the circle of life (soil, flora, fauna, man) is a complete system and we incorporate/ support all aspects of biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil biological activity. Respect for the watertable below us is paramount.
We incorporate cover crops, crop rotation and use our own mix of compost. Weed control is obtained through the use of hoeing, mulching, horticultural vinegar, or other mechanical means. We implement the least toxic and/or least energy intensive choices.
Our basic premise of pest control is to use the knowledge of Integrated Pest Management. We will only use a organic qualified pesticide as a LAST RESORT & only according to IPM rules. EIQ (Environmental Impact Quotient) listings are also followed using only the most effective organic if all other options have been exhausted. However, if that option is still too toxic, destroying a crop and removing it from the area is a better alternative. Pesticides are never used during bee/beneficial insect activity.
